Tata Indica Manufactured By Tata Motors

Tata Indica is the first indigenously developed car of India. Manufactured by Tata Motors, the car is successful in domestic market. The car is exported to many countries, including many European and African countries.

Tata Motors has been manufacturing commercial vehicles for long. Indica was the first attempt by the company to make a passenger car. Tata Motors is a part of the Tata group, India's largest business house, having presence in several industries including information technology, steel and telecommunications.

Tata Indica has been selling well in the domestic market. Tata Motors had manufactured more than 910,000 units of Indica by August 2008. The company sold 144,690 units of the car in 2006-07. As of now the car sells around 8000 units in a month.

Tata Indica was launched on 30 December 1998. The name of the car “Indica” is a combination of the words “India” and “car.” The car was marketed in India as an affordable and spacious car. Within a couple of weeks the car had around 115,000 bookings. Indica is a five-door compact hatchback. The car is powered with a 1.4 L petrol/diesel I4 engine. Indica was offered with air conditioning and electric windows. Indica's outer body was designed by Italian design house called I.DE.A Institute.

The early buyers of Indica complained about the performance of the car. Soon, Tata Motors launched Indica V2, which satisfied customers. After that the company has launched many new versions of the car. Tata Motors launched a new car built on a different platform branded as Indica Vista at the 9th Auto Expo in New Delhi. The car was bigger than the existing Indica. The car was available with two new engines a 1.3 L Quadra Jet common rail direct injection diesel and a 1.2 L Safire MPFI VVT petrol engine. It was manufactured at Tata plant based at Ranjangaon.

There is news that Tata Motors is going to launch electric versions of Indica in the domestic market in 2011. This move of Tata Motors seems to have been inspired by the government's likely move to reduce import duty on green cars in India. The electric Tata Indica is expected to give a mileage of 120 miles on a single charge.
